Wilberg Mine Disaster

Wilberg Memorial Monument

December 19, 1984 is a date that the kids of Orangeville, and the surrounding communities will never forget. A compressor fire in the Wilberg Mine Disaster trapped and took the lives of 27 local miners, many of which lived in Orangeville at the time. The men killed in the disaster left dozens of young children in the community without their fathers, and their mothers without their husbands. This lonely black marble monument stands northwest of Orangeville, with it's back to the now abandoned canyon that once contained the Wilberg Mine portal. Many of the Wilberg Mine kids are now in their mid to late 30's and have moved away to other places, but there are those who remain in the Castle Valley, and continue mining coal that is used to supply America with electrical power.
